Swimming with the Sharks: ABC’s “Shark Tank” is a summer hit

“I would like $250,000 for a 15% stake in a children’s entertainment marketing business, born from a mother’s heart, who raised her kids by clowning her way through motherhood.” Or, some sort of dollars paired with some sort of high or low percentages. And, some type of gig polished up to wow the Sharks in order to further an idea, a business, a patent, a “whatever.” It’s about making money. It’s about making it big. It’s “the rest is history” in the making.

The stakes are high, or sometimes too low, depending on the business savvy of the Fish, as they nervously pitch their shtick in front of the Sharks in ABC’s break-out-of-the-recession series, and my new favorite reality TV obsession, “Shark Tank.”
Five ginormously successful Sharks lead creator Mark Burnett’s (“Survivor”) newly acclaimed show: Barbara Corcoran, self-made real estate giant, Daymond John, can you say: FUBU?, Kevin Harrington, the king of highly addictive infomercials, Kevin O’Leary, the smartly Simon Cowell-type of the show and Robert Herjavec, a security software guru. Each has the power to make a competitor’s dreams come true, and they are doing just that. In the past three weeks, the Sharks have already invested over $1.5 million in the original business ideas presented to them by the Fish. Not too shabby.

It wasn’t Mark Burnett’s excellent track record that drew me to the show, nor was it the lurid appeal of another TV reality show. It was the idea that a struggling entrepreneur has a once in a lifetime chance to sell themselves and their goods to people with *gasp* MONEY. In today’s market, money isn’t easy to come by, or hold onto for that matter, so why not?

I love the win-win approach to this reality show. The Fish’s ideas, when pitched successfully, win over the actual dollars from one or more of the Sharks. It’s quite simple really: real cash, given to the right people, to make more money, for more people. Yeah, it’s that easy. Gotta love the K.I.S.S. philosophy on the boob tube.

If the Sharks like the idea, they might even fight amongst themselves in order to buy the concept being sold. Super-de-duper fun to watch, especially seeing the trembling wannabe listening to the dollars tossed out, the percentages climbing higher and higher and with the decision of whether they’ll walk out of the room rich with some pure dough, or leave with nothing more, looming imminently overhead.

Stay in your seat. Decisions are made on the spot. Only twice have the Sharks allowed someone to leave the room to think, call a loved one, or use a lifeline and to then hurry their butts back to the hotspot and spill their “yes” or “no” response to the Shark’s offer(s). And there I am sitting in my chair at home, with edge of seat in position, eyes-wide and waiting. Will the idea make beaucoup bucks? Would I buy or use, or even want the whatever it is they’re pitching? Is their idea the next big thing?
So every Sunday night you’ll know where I am, with heartbeat quickened, possibly with notepad in hand, waiting for my, yes my, show.

And hey, one day some random mom, who has been a professional clown, should pitch that amazing, wonderful, fantastic children’s entertainment marketing business idea. Maybe it should be me? *Insert innocent grin here.* Who knows?
“Shark Tank,” airs Sundays (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on ABC.

Have you ever asked yourself, what do I really want in life? Why am I here? Why do or don’t I have the things I want? The simple answer to most of those questions will be money. Here is a simple but very real test! Ask yourself the question of “why” 10 to 15 times after your answers. Example:

* What do I want in life? Money

* Why? Because I will be able to buy the things I can’t afford.

* Why can’t I afford them? Because I don’t make enough at work.

* Why don’t I Make enough at work? Because I just started this position.

* Why? Because I was in a relationship and the one I loved didn’t want me to work.

* WHY DID YOU ALLOW THEM TO NOT LET YOU WORK?

ANYWAY! You get it? If you answer with total honesty, you may not like the final answer that will be provided. This answer will be so pure that it will either force you to change, or it will force you to back away and develop another layer to mask what you are really worth. If you do decide to take the most painful route and face your imperfections face to face, then you will quickly realize that all your pain and sorrow stems from these deeply hidden issues. The good thing is that once you know the issue and are willing to face it, you can cure it quickly.

All people with “TRUE POWER” know what author Doris Mortman said, “Until you make peace with who you are, you will never be content with what you have. “Thanks for your support of me on twitter @TheSharkDaymond and on my new show ‘Shark Tank’ on ABC Sunday nights @ 9pm. Please enjoy the week.

I’m gonna keep it real with ya, I love the spotlight! I want fame! Its a great feeling to have people adore you and then after you have fame, people fall over themselves to give you money. Most people feel the same way as me but don’t want to admit it. I don’t have any of the qualities that the famous cats have. I can’t rap, play ball, design, act or even model. But I do have desire and know that if I get my foot in the door, I would kill it. Talk to me homie!
- Baby boy, Arizona

I respect your honesty! First, look at businesses other than the ones you’ve mentioned, everybody is trying for those careers! It’s overcrowded! You want to start a business you like, get paid and then create your fame! Being only talent, you are at the mercy of others. Look at the Perdue chicken guy, Trump, Gates, Wynn, Tony Robbins, Orvel Redenbacher and the late Dave Thomas of Wendy’s.  All these people are household names, faces and filthy rich. They all chose different paths of fortune and fame. TRUE POWER is to “ZIG WHEN PEOPLE ZAG,” think outside the box homie.  You will have little competition, get paid and they wont see you coming!!!

I’m stressed baby! I keep hitting the glass ceiling! I’ve been striping for 7 years now and I make great money. I’ve started 3 separate businesses and funded them with my dancing money. But just when I think I see the light, I keep failing for some reason or another. It’s come to the point that I don’t think I will ever have another career. Should I just quit trying after 3 strikes and stick to adult entertainment?
- Sylvia, ATL

Easy answer! YOU QUIT WHEN YOU DIE!! You call 3 times failing, a glass ceiling?  How about this?  Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 3 decades only to rise and be the President of the same government that jailed him! Irv Gotti and Diddy both faced trials of their lives to come back and reinvent themselves as stars of TV and music! LL has spanned a red-hot music career for 20yrs when most artists can’t last 3! Tyra Banks and Kimora Lee Simmons both flipped modeling careers into being powerful CEO’s! I can go on and on of those who will not quit, no matter the setbacks.  When you were a baby and tried to walk, after you fell down 10 times, did you decide to quit and crawl for life? No, so why stop now?  TRUE POWER is to know that “YOUR FAILURES WILL ONLY FUEL YOUR SUCCESSES.”  See you at the top or sliding down a pole. The choice is up to you.

Balance business and your family

I’ve been in the entertainment management game for 20 years. I’ve gotten paid well and traveled the world over. The only down side is, cause its a service industry, I’ve never been able to get that exit strategy big payday like many other businesses and brands. I’ve luckily invested in the right stocks, so I’m not strapped for cash. The problem is, investing in artists for years has taken a toll on quality time with my wife and kids, but I find myself still hungry at 50 yrs old. Is it to late to invest in another business to finally get the big payday?

Holla,
Angel, CA

It sounds like you’ve made the right moves! You have successfully invested in the right businesses, artists, and stocks. I’m sure this wasn’t easy, but it paid off. If you are not strapped for cash, I do agree that you should invest in a new business! And the new business should be “your family.” You can still look at a new venture as well. I’m sure you didn’t invest in only 1 artist and your portfolio probably has many stocks also. Treat your life the same. Nobody has ever been on their deathbed and said “I should’ve spent more time in the office.”  TRUE POWER is to “BALANCE YOUR LIFE.”  If you’ve managed artists, then I’m sure you will have no problem managing your family to be superstars in whatever path in life they choose. And you never know, maybe they can give you some ideas on the new business.  It might end up being a family business!!
Respectfully,
Daymond John
